H.E Shk. Hamad Bin Jabor Bin Jassim Al Thani, Secretary General of the Planning Council has launched the first copy of the Atlas. Addressing to the media and the guests present, Shk Hamad said that this publication will be a very useful and important resource for the administrators, planners, decision makers besides the scientists and researchers in different fields as it demonstrates the overall geographic and socio-economic profile of the country.
This 421 pages A3 Size publication comes as the second edition to the first ever published Socio-Economic Atlas of Qatar published by the Department earlier in 2000.
The atlas is prepared by the GIS Section of the Planning Council using the latest Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and specialized software to process and produce the maps. A few maps bearing non-statistical themes are based on the information made available from other GIS databases in Qatar. The information received in the form of maps, images, statistical tables and reports has been further processed in the General Secretariat of Planning Council GIS Section for the representation of themes.
The Atlas is primarily focused in analyzing the Socio-economic data of the country, mainly available through periodical Census and Surveys conducted by
the Department. However, a significant portion of the Atlas is been devoted to the Topographical maps, Administrative set up, Physiographic and Environmental conditions of the country. Its also highlights country's Infrastructure, Trade, Economy and Industrial scene including themes of Tourist interest.
For the convenience of users, the atlas also contains two A-1 size index maps of Qatar (separately in Arabic and English). These contain some important statistics and information about Qatar beside Doha Rayyan area street map with important landmark locations.
The Atlas is subsequently being converted into an interactive CD and will be available to the users soon.
