Atlas of Qatar wins 3rd place in an International GIS Conference,
2008. |

Digital Atlas of Qatar has won the 3rd best Multimedia Publication
at the 28th Annual ESRI International GIS Users Conference held in
San Diego, California, USA during 4-8 August 2008.
The award was announced by the ESRI President during the closing
ceremony of the conference. The conference was attended by more that
13,000 participants, GIS specialist and experts from 123 countries.
The publication attracted the attendees' attention on the way it was
designed and how easy it was to interact with the contents.

This achievement is a step forward for Qatar in the international
gatherings of such repute, demonstrating how the enterprise GIS
system makes the best use of the latest technology following same
standards and specifications throughout the country.
The printed copy of Qatar National Atlas, which was produced by the
Statistics Authority, achieved 2nd Place as the Best Press Copy
Atlas in the same conference in 2007.
The Digital Atlas of Qatar is a replica of hard copy of Qatar
National Atlas which includes a complete socio-economic profile of
the country based on the statistics and results of the General
Population and Housing Censuses Qatar has undertaken in the year
1986, 1997, 2004 and 2007.
The results have been analysed and displayed in the form of thematic
maps and diagrams utilising latest GIS techniques and supported with
a brief analytical text to make sure that the users would comprehend
and understand the information easily.
An interactive map making application was added to the Digital Atlas
to allow the users to query & display the statistics and geographic
information such as landmarks and streets. The user can also draw a
map based on his interest. The user has a choice to draw maps using
his preferred colours and the method that suits his requirements the
best.
