H. E. Sheikh Hamad is attending the meeting for the first time following an
appointment by Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, Director General of United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, to sit as a Governing Board
member of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics representing Qatar and other Arab
states.
On the sidelines of the tenth session of UIS Governing Board, H. E. Sheikh Hamad
will hold bilateral meetings with directors of different departments in UIS to
deepen and foster cooperation between Arab Statistics Offices and each
respective department.
In the bilateral meetings, Sheikh Hamad discussed several issues including
extending technical assistance to other Arab countries, which currently
available only to Iraq and Yemen; and urged for partnerships with ESCWA and
other UN regional organizations as well as development of a plan to introduce
data accuracy assessment in order to reduce data gaps and help in finding
solutions to data discrepancy.
In the Governing Board meeting, H. E. Sheikh Hamad presented the outcomes of a
consultations conducted by Qatar Statistics Authority with the Chiefs of
National Statistics Offices in Arab countries to assemble their opinions and
recommendations pertaining to the quality of education statistics for measuring
the development of education, technology, culture, and communications in their
countries.
As a result of this survey it became clear that there are significant short
comings and many opportunities for the UNESCO Institute of Statistics to provide
assistance to Arab countries. There are many suggestions for improvements.
H. E. Sheikh Hamad gave a detailed presentation on the outcomes of these
consultations during the tenth session of UIS Governing Board which was held
early this month.
