H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor Al Thani participated in the Tenth Session of the UIS Governing Board
 

 
   

 H. E. Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor Al Thani, Director General of the General Secretariat for Development Planning and Acting President of the Qatar Statistics Authority, participated in the Tenth Session of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics Governing Board meeting. The meeting was held from November 5 to 7 in Montréal, Canada

   


H. E. Sheikh Hamad is attending the meeting for the first time following an appointment by Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, Director General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, to sit as a Governing Board member of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics representing Qatar and other Arab states.

On the sidelines of the tenth session of UIS Governing Board, H. E. Sheikh Hamad will hold bilateral meetings with directors of different departments in UIS to deepen and foster cooperation between Arab Statistics Offices and each respective department.

In the bilateral meetings, Sheikh Hamad discussed several issues including extending technical assistance to other Arab countries, which currently available only to Iraq and Yemen; and urged for partnerships with ESCWA and other UN regional organizations as well as development of a plan to introduce data accuracy assessment in order to reduce data gaps and help in finding solutions to data discrepancy.

In the Governing Board meeting, H. E. Sheikh Hamad presented the outcomes of a consultations conducted by Qatar Statistics Authority with the Chiefs of National Statistics Offices in Arab countries to assemble their opinions and recommendations pertaining to the quality of education statistics for measuring the development of education, technology, culture, and communications in their countries.

As a result of this survey it became clear that there are significant short comings and many opportunities for the UNESCO Institute of Statistics to provide assistance to Arab countries. There are many suggestions for improvements.

H. E. Sheikh Hamad gave a detailed presentation on the outcomes of these consultations during the tenth session of UIS Governing Board which was held early this month.
