QSA conducts the second meeting of the National Statistical Consultative Committee

 
   

The Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) held the second meeting for members of the National Statistical Consultative Committee functioning under the QSA. The committee specializes in providing support and advisory roles to the QSA.

 
   


The meeting began with opening remarks by H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor bin Jassim Al Thani on the significance of using official statistics for evidence-based policy formulation and the role of government institutions in the national statistical system.

The participants of the meeting discused three items on its agenda: 2010 Population, Housing and Establishment Census, sectoral statistics and electronic links between QSA and statistical agencies, and the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS).

In the first item, the meeting talked about the 2010 Population, Housing and Establishment Census that all GCC states will be carrying out in response to resolutions of the UN that call for nations of the world to conduct a census at least every 10 years.

The second item of the meeting agenda had two sections: sectoral statistics and electronic links between QSA and statistical agencies. In the first section, participants will seek to harmonize, standardize, and coordinate the statistical activities of data producers in the country to generate a coherent, integrated set of statistics for national, regional, and international use. For the latter section, they highlighted the importance of electronic links to be set up between QSA and other statistical agencies.

In the last item on the agenda, the participants discussed the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS) and its current implementation in the national statistical system in addition to the role of government institutions in fulfilling GDDS requirements.

At the end of the meeting, the participants discussed possible mechanisms to enhance and empower the national statistical system as well as satisfy demand on data.
