Qatar Ranks 34th Out of 179 Countries in Latest Update of the Human Development Index

A statistical update of the Human Development Index 2006 released by the Human Development Office in New York on 18 December 2008 has given the State of Qatar a rank of 34th out of 179 countries, i.e. one rank higher than previous year report.

Each year since 1990, the Human Development Report Office has published the human development index (HDI) which looks beyond GDP to a broader definition of well-being. According to the update of the of the Human Development Report Index, life expectancy at age 0 in Qatar has reached 75.3 and probability of survival beyond age 40 is 96.3%, which is attributed to improvement in living standards and health conditions in the country.

Children who are underweight between age 0-5 are only 6% of all children, giving a good mark for nourishment. Availability of pure water in Qatar is 100%. As it is well known, Qatar ranked 2nd among world countries for per capita GDP in 2006 and 2nd only to Luxembourg.

The HDI provides a composite measure of three dimensions of human development: living a long and healthy life (measured by life expectancy), being educated (measured by adult literacy and enrolment at primary, secondary and tertiary levels) and having a decent standard of living (measured by purchasing power parity, PPP, income).

Updates of statistical date are regularly published by the Human Development Index Office. On this occasion, H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor Al Thani, the QSA Acting President, said: “QSA will further coordinate with UNDP, UNPD. UNESCO Institute for Statistics and the World Bank, for the next year Human Development Report to reflect the status of development in Qatar.”
