H. E. Sheikh Hamad bin Jabor Al Thani, Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) Acting President has become a member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), one of the oldest scientific associations operating in the modern world.

H. E. Sheikh Hamad said that he would seize the opportunity to maximise cooperation with ISI that has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

In a letter from President of ISI Professor Denise Lievesley to H E Sheik Hamad, Lievesley said that she was confident that a constructive relationship will be created between ISI and QSA under the leadership of H. E. Sheikh Hamad.

Established in 1885, the ISI is composed of more than 2,000 elected members who are internationally recognised as the definitive leaders in the field of statistics. Its membership crosses all borders, representing more than 133 countries worldwide.

The success of the ISI can be attributed to the increasing worldwide demand for professional statistical information, its leadership in the development of statistical methods and their application, and in the collective dedication of its members.

The influence of the Institute can be seen in the improvements in information and analysis throughout the economic, social, biological and industrial sectors. Its industrial influence is evidenced in advanced statistical practices, resulting in improved quality assurance.

The ISI publishes a variety of professional books, journals, newsletters and reports on developments of contemporary statistical knowledge.

The Institute is especially renowned for its biennial meetings in which the entire membership congregates to exchange innovative ideas, develop new links and discuss current trends and development in the statistical world. The 57th Session of the ISI is scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa during the period 16 – 22 August 2009.

The ISI has the following Sections:
