Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) announced today that it has completed the final stage of a review of the CPI with the simultaneous release of a new CPI covering the first four months of 2009 up to April. The new CPI is now in line with the international standards expected by the QSA’s National Strategy for the Development of Statistics. The review involved reselecting and reweighting the basket of goods and services priced within the CPI, to ensure that the basket continues to reflect household spending patterns within Qatar.

The monthly CPI increased 0.2 percent in the April 2009 month, following successive monthly declines in the January, February and March 2009 months of 5.0 percent, 1.1 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively.

The sharp decline in the monthly CPI for the January 2009 month (as a result of a declines in Rent, Fuel and Power; Entertainment, Recreation and Culture; and Transport and Communication) was followed in the February and March months with similar across the board declines, although at a reduced rate. The April month has seen a stabilisation of prices.

On an annual basis, QSA said that the CPI showed the stabilisation in prices occurring in the quarter ending March 2009, where the annual inflation rate had dropped to 1.3%, down from 13.2 percent in the quarter ending December 2008.

On a quarterly basis, the CPI decreased 6.2 percent in the quarter ending March 2009, following 15 consecutive quarters of growth. Most CPI groups recorded decreases in the quarter ending March 2009, with the strongest declines coming through from the Rent, Fuel and Power group (down 10.6 percent), the Entertainment, Recreation and Culture group (down 6.0 percent), and the Furniture, Textiles and Home Appliances group (down 5.4 percent). The Miscellaneous Goods and Services group provided the only significant offsetting increase for the quarter, increasing 2.3 percent during the quarter.
