This is the first of a regular update of the progress with the 2008
Economic Survey.
The objectives of the survey are to provide a benchmark for our
economic statistics, particularly pertaining to national accounts
and our regular business related statistics.
The Economic Statistics Department of QSA held the first major
meeting to kick-off the enumeration stage of the survey.
Over 380 people attended the event held in the QSA auditorium which
was full to beyond capacity at some stages, on Thursday evening
where the design, requirements and objectives of the survey were
outlined in order to pre-screen the applicants. The screening
happened after the event and was based on how well the applicants
understood the project, as evidenced by a test held after the
presentations, their qualifications and previous experience. Around
250 applicants were selected.
The project lead, Mr. Abulhameed Ali Ahen explained the process and
introduced various speakers who concentrated on particular sectors.
Mr. Basim Wasif Marmash spoke on the financial sector, Ms. Wadha al
Jabor on industry and Mr. Abdulhadi ali Awad on construction.
The event was also attended by the media and was supported by many
of the ESD staff who worked extremely hard and effectively to make
this kick-off event a success.
The timeframe for the survey project is extremely tight and ESD and
the field staff and supervisors have shown an extremely high level
of devotion to have selected moved the project so far along in a
very short time. The objective is to get 100 percent response from
the 10,000 businesses selected for the survey.
Finally, it was very encouraging to see many graduates from Qatar
University attending, many were asking all the right questions after
the presentations and were interested in finding more about work at
QSA.
