Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) announced today that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for May 2009 stood at 126.13, an increase of 0.6 percent when compared to the April CPI which stood at 125.44. The base period of the new index was 2006.

The May increase followed an increase of 0.2 percent in April that had in turn followed two successive monthly declines seen in February and March 2009 of 1.1 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively.

The QSA stated that the monthly CPI was started in January 2009 and is compiled on the basis of a monthly survey of prices for approximately three thousand goods and services, collected from over five hundred sources across Qatar. The selection of these goods and services was based on the results of a household survey started in 2006. The relative share of total household expenditure on each item is represented as a weight (as shown in table) in order to represent the average consumption for households in Qatar.
