The most
significant decrease in the CPI was seen in rental prices which had
been experiencing high rates of growth in previous years. The
household rent, water and electricity and household maintenance
component of the CPI was now 4.4 percent lower than in January 2009.
The food, beverages and tobacco component of the CPI was down 0.7
percent over the previous month of May and 2.6 percent lower than in
January 2009. Offsetting the 3.0 percent decrease in food prices
over the first six months of 2009, beverages were up by 2.7 percent
and tobacco products were up by 9.4 percent.

The transport and communication component of the CPI was up 1.1
percent when compared to May. This reflected the seasonal increase
in airline fares associated with summer travel demand. Communication
prices continued the downward trend seen during 2009 and were down
0.9 percent compared to May and down by 11.5 percent compared to the
beginning of the year.
During 2009 the CPI index component showing the largest percentage
decline was clothing and footwear which was 8.0 percent lower in
June when compared to January.
The monthly CPI was started in January 2009 and is compiled on the
basis of a monthly survey of prices for approximately three thousand
goods and services, collected from over five hundred sources across
Qatar.
