HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jaber bin Jassim Al Thani, QSA President, have
received a letter from Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO,
stating that after extensive consultations with a number of
high-level regional and international authorities, QSA President has
been appointed for a second term, which will expire in December
2015, as a member to the Board of Directors of UNESCO Institute for
This is in recognition of his great efforts made to improve
the work of the Institute, as stated in the letter.
It is worth mentioning that HE Sheikh Hamad has served as Vice
Chairman of the Institute during the first term.
In this context, we would like to mention that UNESCO, which is
based in Montreal, Canada, is mandated to collect data related to
education, science, culture, technology and scientific research, and
to issue analytical reports about the abovementioned topics. UNESCO
is also known as a top Institute managing the largest global
Furthermore, the Institute contributes to the development of statistical
methodologies concerning data collection, analysis, dissemination
and building statistical capacity of member countries. The Institute
have recently prepared a global framework for cultural statistics,
with the aim of assisting member countries in collecting data
pertaining to culture, and in issuing cultural reports. This is to
help decision makers evaluate their achievements and stay up-to-date
on the progress of this field. The Institute is currently preparing
a report on scientific research statistics, including concepts and
definitions of scientific research and development inputs as well as
outputs. Moreover, the Institute works on setting practical
applications for the International Standard Classification of
Education (ISCED), the new revision.
Since HE Sheikh Hamad has joined the membership the Board of
Directors of the Institute, many activities relating to building
national statistical capacity in the State of Qatar, GCC and other
Arab countries has been organized. The Institute's advisory services
has been useful while undertaking works of the aforesaid fields.
According to Institute's 2012 plan, some workshops will be organized
in the State of Qatar, Sultanate of Oman and United Arab Emirates.
